New Balance 890 Review

New Balance 890

New Balance 890

The New Balance 890 is made for runners who are after as lightweight running shoes as possible. The ultralight sneakers fall into the neutral shoe category like the previous 759 and 905 models, however, the New Balance 890 is something completely new and the difference can be noticed at a first sight. But the main difference is of course the lightweight of the 890 model which can be felt as soon as you try these sneakers on.

The New Balance 890 weighs only 9.7 ounces (275 grams) which makes it a great choice if you are after a minimalist running shoe and a barefoot-like running experience. The amazing lightweight of the New Balance 890 is achieved thanks to the innovative REVlite foam which is as much as 30 percent lighter than other foams that provide a comparable cushioning, performance and durability. Despite the lightweight, the New Balance 890 comes with enough cushioning and firmness for everyday training. Like most other New Balance running shoes, the 890 model features the ABZORB Strobel Board along the full length of the shoe in order to provide optimal shock absorption when landing on the ground as well as a great deal of comfort during training.

The synthetic mesh upper is both lightweight and breathable but it provides enough support to the foot. Surprisingly, the company has decided for flat lances rather than the round ones. They do not just prevent the shoe from getting untied though. Together with the mesh overlay, the 890 lancing system makes the shoe more snugly-fitting and makes you feel almost like barefoot. Another pleasant surprise is the tongue which does not need a break in like in most other running shoes.

The sole of the New Balance 890 is simple and effective. It comes with the traditional heel to toe drop with the heel significantly thicker in order to provide a smoother transition from heel to toe as well as maximum shock absorption. However, the heel is different in that it is slightly dropped at the sides and elevated in the back. The outsole features the Ndurance carbon rubber which guarantees resistance against wear and tear, while the cutouts in the sole help reduce the weight of the shoe and do not pick up the rocks.

The New Balance 890 looks kind of sleeker, however, the company has not sacrificed the width of the toe box to create a sleeker design. The toe box is still comfortably wide and absorbs the forefoot strike remarkably well. The New Balance apparently paid a great deal of attention to each detail when designing the 890 model because it is a unique blend of lightweight, comfort and durability as well as a great price considering what it offers. The New Balance 890 is without a doubt worth considering if you are looking for a quality lightweight running shoes but it is also a great shoe for transition to minimalistic running sneakers. Like most other running shoes created by New Balance, the 890 model is available in many different colors enabling to both feel good and look good while training.
